Reframing resolutions: What do you want to better this year?

January 1st is the day when most Canadians make a pledge to better themselves in the form of New Year’s resolutions.

Considering that Everything gets better when you get active – from the ability to Sleep Better to Focus Better to Heal Better – physical activity is critical in maintaining our physical, mental and social wellbeing.

A fresh calendar year is a natural time for a lot of Canadians to think about making changes in their lives. Getting healthy, making new connections or even working toward that big promotion, there are all kinds of different resolutions millions of us make every year.

But, before you start drastically altering your lifestyle and overwhelming yourself, why not get to the root cause behind all your New Year resolutions. Take some time to think about what you really want, and why you want it.


It doesn’t have to be January to make positive change

Did you have high hopes for your resolution at the beginning of January, but it’s since taken a back seat? It’s okay if things aren’t going according to plan, it happens! In fact, an overwhelming 80 per cent of resolutions will be abandoned by the middle of February, most likely for one of the following reasons:

  • Your goals aren’t clear
  • You feel discouraged
  • You become overwhelmed
  • You might not actually be ready for change

Setting and achieving goals isn’t always easy, and that’s OK. Everyone is different, which means everyone has different resolutions in mind for a new year, especially when it comes to getting active. Don’t sweat it (save that for the bike path or yoga studio), consider the following instead:

  • Try to understand why you tripped up
  • Is this going to be an on-going interruption/barrier or just a one-off occurrence?
  • How can you plan to avoid/mitigate this issue from happening again moving forward?
  • Try, try again!
